Take 5: Play, Protection, and Resilience in South Sudan

In South Sudan, violence is widespread—at home, in communities, and in schools. Half a century of conflict has shaped survival strategies into lasting norms. With 57% of the population under 18, many youth have experienced trauma and been directly involved in conflict. Armed gangs fuel instability, child rights violations persist, and opportunities for safe growth are limited.

UNICEF, in partnership with Waves for Change, has piloted Take 5 to strengthen youth well-being through structured play, sport, and creative activities. The programme equips peer educators—Inspirators—with tools to help youth regulate emotions, build confidence, and form positive relationships. Since 2023, over 3,700 young people have participated in Take 5 across schools, youth centres, and detention facilities.

Findings show improved emotional regulation, increased social connectedness, and reduced aggression. Even police officers report better interactions with youth. This case study highlights Take 5’s successful integration into diverse spaces, creating safer environments and fostering resilience. While challenges remain, local leadership and adaptability have been key to its expansion. Continued evaluation will support sustainability and refinement.
