Take 5 & MOD: Strengthening youth well-being in South Africa

In South Africa, safe spaces for children to play, connect, and build resilience are vital. The Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) Programme, led by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), has long provided structured, play-based activities through its 181 MOD Centres, serving over 40,000 youth from underserved communities.

In 2024, Take 5, developed by Waves for Change, was integrated into MOD Centres across 25 schools, enhancing the existing after-school program. This partnership trained 51 DCAS sports coaches to lead 4,200 children through activities designed to strengthen confidence, emotional regulation, and social connection.

Coaches reported greater motivation, improved lesson structure, and stronger engagement with children. Sessions encouraged youth to develop new skills, experience joy, and build resilience, contributing to their long-term well-being.

Surveys showed statistically significant improvements in children’s confidence and emotional health.
